Guyanese (Caribbean) Ancestry

My father’s parents both emigrated from a country in South America called Guyana. This country is made up of:  African, Indian, Amerindian, British, Portuguese, Chinese, and Dutch cultures. My grandma has four brothers and sisters and my grandpa has eight and all fourteen of them along with my great grandmother immigrated to Canada from Guyana. Guyana, other than being the only english speaking country in South America is a culture made up of delicious Caribbean foods, beautiful landscape and their vast love of cricket.
Also stews and curry dishes are very popular in Guyana, but a Guyanese dish that is simple is Chicken, Rice and Beans. To sum up, the Guyanese cuisine is not just made up of one person and their recipes but a mixture of many countries recipes.	The food in Guyana is made up of many cultures such as: Chinese, Arabian, African, European, Amerindian, and East Indian. Now even though these countries do not make similar foods the result is fantastic. Garlic Pork for example although not very appetizing to the ear it’s a great Caribbean food. This food, mainly popular in Guyana from settlers coming from their countries and influenced this country perspective on food.
The beautiful landscape guyana has is shown through it graceful waterfalls and its breathtaking rainforests. Guyana being the land of waterfalls has some pretty amazing waterfalls. Kaieteur Falls is one of these waterfalls located on Guyana’s Potaro River in the Kaieteur National Park. This waterfall, 226 meters (741 feet), is reported to be a waterfall with the longest and widest single-drop in the world. Now of course these waters flow over a series of steep cascades bringing its total height to 251 meters (822 feet). Which is four time higher than Niagara Falls.	The rainforests are also very popular in Guyana because they are large and almost 80 percent of Guyana is covered in untouched rainforests. These rainforests are untouched because Guyana signed an agreement with Norway to avoid deforestation and have earned $250 million from norway for this arrangement after the commitment ended in 2015.  In particular, this shows that Guyana has a great landscape and they intend to keep it in pristine condition.
	Guyana has indian culture, no doubt about that but Guyana gained its fame from its noteworthy Cricketers. Some Cricket players are; Rohan Kanhai, Clive Lloyd, Alvin Kallicharran, Shivnarine Chandarpaul. These men were some of the strongest players in the world playing for the “West Indies” during the 70s to 90s. Cricket is a popular sport played in commonwealth countries because after watching one game it is easy to understand and quite thrilling to enjoy.
In summary, I haven’t done or scene many of the things in Guyana other than tasted their foods. I hope to travel to guyana one day and learn more about this country's love of sports and its wonderful landscape. In summation, this country’s wonderful traditions and passions make me proud to be Guyanese.

A Strong Family Is A Steelers Family:

The tradition that our family loves most is enjoying the football season. We do this through watching football every sunday during the season, especially one team in particular. The “Pittsburgh Steelers” is an American football team that not everyone likes, but in the Jules house they are considered the best team in the league. Their killer offensive game and the fact that they have one of the best defensive lines in the league. To begin, one of things we do once every year is go to watch the Steelers when we go back to school shopping. We either go to; a Steelers game, practice or training camp. We did this because as my dad put it, “it just made sense”(Mark Jules). Although if we did not go back to school shopping in pittsburgh then we would have gone on these trips and I would not love the game as much as I do.

Michael in Steelers Gear- Age 2

I remember going to the Steelers games when I was little it was usually funny because we were so high up in the nosebleeds that the football giants looked like little figurines, but as my father always said, “it was about the experience” (Mark Jules). Me and my dad also went to a steelers game in buffalo last year. Which is where their rookie running back Le’Veon Bell broke the all time record for rushing yards in a single season. The practice we went to this last summer was interesting because even though they were running drills it was fascinating to understand how they became the best at what they do. It was also fun to sit in the front row and be that close to your heroes.

The training camps were always fun because we got to get signatures from the Pittsburgh players on our baseball caps after they finished. When they were training it was also fun to talk to my family and just sit back relax and watch some good football. The best part about these trips and watching the game was not about if they won or lost it was about enjoying spending time with each other and become a stronger more unified Steelers family and my dad said he believed, “having more exposure to the sport would get the whole family interested in football”. Although it is always nice to see your team win in football it is better to obtain a connection with your family. In conclusion, the tradition of watching football every season is what gives our family the connection that we have. Steelers In My DNA
