My family comes from all over including places like Germany, Australia, Scotland, Ukraine, and other European countries. My Father when he was kid celebrated the Ukrainian Christmas on January 7. My parents decided to celebrate it on the classic day so that we would feel included in our communities. My dad would tell me “as a kid we would have our Christmas tree up close to the middle of January and some people would look at us weird” (Logan). Also my Dad's original last name was Hordichuk, but was changed by my Nana feared that he would be bullied. My Great Grandfather served in the second world war, but he died before my Nana could ever meet him. But as far as my father’s side goes we do not do anything to celebrate my Dads heritage.
On my mothers we don’t do anything that celebrates her heritage of ancestors. As far as I know, they celebrated things just as a regular christian family would. My mother's ancestors came from Europe and never passed down any special activities. My biological Grandpa died before my mother could ever meet him, and my Grandma never spoke of him, and same with my step Grandpa. I never knew of anything special his family did because after his passing there was no connection between the families and is stays this same to this day.
My family has never been the one to do any special cultural activities. I myself have always wanted to know more about my ancestry but it's hard to learn when our family is very divided.
